The
'Education and Community Centre'
In 2005 ECN first proposed the idea of Education
and Community Centre for the residents of Maru and surrounding villages
Although most residents were behind this they doubted it would ever
happen because of resistant from the authorities in the area. Many requests
were made to the authorities for suitable land but ECN’s proposals
were never taken seriously. This maybe due to the fact that nothing
like this exists in Romania.
After working extensively with the people in the area for 18 months
we now have a voice and recently been on national TV for the work we
are doing there. This has somewhat ‘forced’ the authorities
to take notice at last. We have been offered land for the project on
a 50 year lease free of charge and told we can build any construction
we need.
What will the centre offer to people
Human Rights Advice centre
An crèche facility
Pre-school playgroup for mothers and pre-school
Community café
Computer suite with internet access for online learning
Disabled access
Homework club in partnership Maru School.
Adult education classes in health and childcare
Support and In-training facility for teachers
Junior club/disco & youth club.
Advice for jobs and careers
Walk-in Surgery for pensioners of the area and transport to hospitals
when required.
Medical advice clinic for parents and children.
This
project will obviously take many months before we can offer all of these
services but with team support it’s achievable.
We hope see the centre open in the summer of 2009., beginning with a
playgroup, homework club, adult education programs and youth & junior
clubs.
A centre co-ordinator will be employed though we hope to encourage residents
to volunteer to run activities.
The
funds for the building, equipment and running the centre will come from
large organisations such as EU funding for Education. We need a group
of mature people to set up a 'fundraising team' to explore every funding
opportuniny for this project. If you feel you can help this project
